A large, completely formed fossil bivalve (clam) that has been replaced by opal! This is a complete replacement, and an excellent example of this rare natural process from the famous opal mines of Coober Pedy. For the size, it is one of the most solid and full replacements we have had, as you can see through it - it is all translucent opal rough for cutting quality. And, when backlit, it glows. These are Cretaceous aged, about 100 million years old. We normally cannot buy them on the mineral market anymore, but occasionally find specimen quality opalized fossils with the gem rough dealers art several of the international shows - although the problem there is that they are also priced for cutting rough and by the carat or by the gram.
