Hematite

This is a significant, dramatic old classic from Brazil in the 1960s era of mining, seldom seen today! Hematite is one of the better known metallic species for collectors, and the specimens from Itabira, Brazil are some of the best quality examples from any locality outside of the Swiss Alps or Kalahari. These pseudocubic shapes, as you see here so dramatically, make them special. Most people are familiar with the famous "iron roses" of Hematite from brazil from more modern finds, but this is much more rare. The piece hosts very attractive and impressive, sharp, notably well-formed, rhombic (pseudo-cubic) crystals of submetallic, gray-black Hematite ; with the big one, front-and-center on the piece, measuring 4.3 cm on edge! This isn't the typical form collectors associate with this locality or the species in general. This is a big, beautiful small cabinet piece that is well composed and nicely balanced specimen with well-defined individual crystals, especially the big one, which is certainly not common for Hematite. Complete all around with only some minor edge wear. As they were mined in the 1960s, great ones like this are difficult to find. This is early number 1884 in the Cook collection (which hit over 10000), probably acquired in the 1960s not long after they came out.
