Smithsonite
Blue Smithsonite from the Kelly Mine is among the most famous of all USA classic mineral discoveries, and these specimens have places of honor in most collections. While botryoidal (rounded) growth on flat plates is the norm, very very few specimens are 3-dimensional and vertical in display. This is a uniquely aesthetic piece that looks like a giant organic blue growth, reaching upwards. The right "wing" is complete all around the periphery, and exceptionally three-dimensional! I have never seen another of the like for aesthetics. It stands upright on its own, on a well trimmed bit of rock at the bottom as a natural pedestal. The Smithsonite is thick, richly blue, translucent to light, and has wonderful color. This is an unusual, large display specimen from the collection of New Mexico specialist Martin Zinn, and from his well known suite of Kelly pieces built up over decades of buying these out of old collections as they came to market. Exceptional!
