At just over 1400 grams (over 3 pounds in weight) this is a massive example of the oldest style of Kelly Mine smithsonite, that formed huge rounded domes of thick material, often carved and used in jewelry and art objects. It is a complete specimen, all around, with no damage and almost evenly colored throughout. Due to the style, size, and color (a more seafoam blue-green, a bit different than the usual colors from more modern finds), and to the unique strange matrix beneath it (a porous quartz-rich material), this seems typical of the oldest collectible material which we have seen in museums and collections dated to the early 1900s. This is a huge, important display specimen of important USA Smithsonite, rarely seen in such size and condition. It was the largest specimen we obtained in the important Kelly Smithsonite suite of the Martin Zinn collection (and he has long specialized, for decades, in accumulating this material out of old collections as they turned up).
