Quartz var. Amethyst (cactus Quartz)
Amethyst from the Boekenhouthoek area of South Africa is so distinctive and different from all worldwide occurrences for this Quartz varietal. When these first appeared on the market, the best of them in the late 1990s, the new style was so distinctive in fact that it was immediately designated as "cactus quartz" for their thick, central amethystine core that is completely covered with a sparkly druse of cactus-like "spines" that grow perpendicular to the length of the crystal. The glassy tips are free of this druse, making this particular specimen and style so singular among so many that came out. This particular piece features four major crystals and several smaller ones with these characteristic attributes along with rich grape-jelly Amethyst color and great luster! This is literally one of the absolute best of the material for the size, when you look at it compared to others, and it has been in the Halpern collection since it came out. The largest crystal in the center of the piece has a tight parallel growth of 8 cm long Amethyst crystals with the later generation of smaller ones wrapping the prism faces of the earlier formed larger ones. Extremely aesthetic in every way and a superior piece from the find out of the renowned collection of Jack Halpern, some of which we have been privileged to offer.
