Boleite
The Boleo district, discovered at the end of the 19th century, was the first major copper deposit in Mexico. It was operated by a French company in very hard conditions because the region was desert and isolated: it was necessary to start everything from scratch. It owes its international reputation to the discovery in the Amelia mine of three minerals crystallized in an almost unique intense blue-indigo color: boleite, pseudo-boleite and cumengeite. These crystals result from the alteration of copper sulfides and silver-bearing galena by solutions loaded with sea salt, source of chlorine. Nowhere else were these three species found in equivalent crystals. Crystals close to or larger than 10 mm, such as those of this superb sample consisting of 5 perfect crystals on their original matrix are exceptional (the usual dimensions being a few millimeters).
