Beryl (var. Heliodor)
Gem beryls from the Ukrainian pegmatites were not seen outside the USSR until some crystals began to be smuggled out in the late 1970s. Following the fall of the Soviet Union around 1989, more were exported. This doubly terminated yellow transparent crystal, from a major pocket found in 1992, is a superb example, showing the typically etched but highly lustrous surface, yet retaining the original hexagonal form unlike most samples from this mine which have a "melted" aspect.
