Pyrite on Arsenopyrite
Herb Obodda had an extensive suite of Panasqueira minerals from the late 1960s and 1970s during the heyday of this important tungsten-tin mine, which for its time produced so many species and specimens for the mineral world. While famous for Apatite and Ferberite. There were other species too just not as many and not often seen or readily available. Pyrite is uncommon from Panasqueira and this impressive specimen is actually really good for the locality. The surface display shows off two generations of Pyrite with the earliest represented by clusters of small, 5 mm, tight cubes running down the center of the piece and then a second generation of larger crystals having intergrown crystals to 2 cm on edge as mounded, three-dimensional groups. The Pyrites rest on a silvery Arsenopyrite matrix and there is even a partial Fluorapatite crystal as an added bonus. Good Pyrites from Panasqueira should be as treasured as any other species from this important locality and this one will add to the breadth of any Panasqueira collection. Much better in person because the luster and sheer metallic flash of the piece is hard to capture. A very fine and somewhat rare European Pyrite!
