Smithsonite var. Cobaltian
This attractive Cobaltoan Smithsonite is from the 1970s or early 1980s at Tsumeb and very rare today. One of the most classic styles of Smithsonite from this locality are the famous pinks and there is a range of pink colors and this one is hot pink, with a saturation most Cobaltoan Smithsonite don't have. The isolated and sharp, translucent crystals here are another rare style all on its own, so combining the crystal habit and color, we have a truly special specimen with unusually robust color and crystal form. Slightly curved, lustrous and translucent, pink crystals of Cobaltoan Smithsonite to 1.8 cm across totally cover a shallow plate of a black sulfide matrix. It is much more impressive in person than it appears in flat photos and somehow has a presence to it that most pieces lack. It is pristine and certainly stands out on a shelf. It is from the extensive Namibia collection of Shields Flynn, which we purchased in 2020.
