Tsumeb mine is renowned for many mineralogical things, amongst which its Dolomite casts after Calcite feature prominently. These can take many forms dependent on the original crystal shape of Calcite but are usually smooth on their outer surface. This wonderful cabinet-sized plate of Dolomite epimorphs after Calcite presents a different form, but one with extraordinary character - as it represents a replacement of Calcite crystals which had themselves been partially overgrown by a later generation of Calcite. Essentially a replacement of two generations of Calcite, the Dolomite forms creamy butter-milk coloured micro-crystals. The earlier triangular nail-head Calcite crystals, which reach up to 1.2 cm on edge, are replaced by a smoother, finer-grained Dolomite, and the second generation of Calcite - as an equilateral triangular outer rim - by radial fibrous Dolomite crystals infilled with micro-rhombohedral crystals. The underside of the specimen is also unusual in that the hollow casts have extended, almost stalactitic, edges forming a pendular network. An excellent and aesthetic Tsumeb epimorph.
