Hiddenite is about 4 km east of Taylorsville in Alexander County, North Carolina, USA and is one of those rare locations which is named after a mineral, rather than vice versa. The town, a mecca for gem prospecting, was named after the green variety of Spodumene found there by W.E. Hidden in about 1800. The area appears to have more than its fair share of mineral species and world-class specimens. Amongst these is Rutile and this terrific large miniature/small cabinet comprises a single elongated and flattened jet-black crystal with steep terminated faces emerging from partial faces of the prism body. The crystal faces have a bright metallic lustre with sharp chisel-like terminations and smooth yet slight rippled surfaces. A few fragments of a salmon-orange matrix remain adhered in crevices along the specimen's base, of probable Dolomite. This is a great statement specimen of Rutile from Hiddenite.
