MERCURIAN Tetrahedrite (SCHWAZITE) with Baryte
A well-formed intergrown group of metallic grey, mercury rich Tetrahedrite crystals, formerly known as the variety Schwazite. From the Brixlegg-Schwaz area of the Inn Valley in North Tyrol, Austria, several more Schwazite crystals can be seen on the colourless Quartz druse which overgrows pinkish Calcite. Dominating the specimen are three pure white intergrown cockscomb mounds of rounded Baryte crystals of up to almost 3.5 cm diameter. The term Schwazite is seldom used nowadays, tending to be replaced by the term mercurian Tetrahedrite. However, this term is now loosing favour and being replaced by ‘mercury-bearing Tetrahedrite’. No matter what the nuances of terminology, it remains a terrific specimen!\n
