Fluorite

The W'lsendorf Fluorite Mining District of Bavaria, Germany, has produced a stunning variety of coloured Fluorites over its extensive mining history which dates back to at least the 15th century. The intentional extraction of Fluorite from this area did not commence until the 19th century, but Fluorite must inevitably have been produced during the previous centuries while mining solely for metals. Like so many large mining areas, specimens were often only assigned the general district name rather than the individual mine from which they came, be this to protect the actual source or, more likely, such detailed specific records were deemed unnecessary. This handsome cabinet specimen is composed of intergrown cubic Fluorite crystals of a most attractive blackberry-purple. The in strong reflected light, corners and patches of the crystal faces become translucent, emitting a mottled patchwork of Royal purple, lavender and violet. The crystals are developed up to almost 4 cm across, but average more typically 1.5 to 2 cm. The crystals are stepped up and down along their faces and edges, producing a blocky, coarsely pixelated effect, with occasional faces being lightly dusted with micro-crystals of drusy Quartz.
