The state of Arizona is home to some of the USA's most famous and historic mines, and one right at the top of the list is the Mammoth-Saint Anthony mine at Tiger in Pinal County. This much-loved locality is rightly famous for its extensive suite of arsenates and other rare minerals, analogies for which can be made with both Cornwall and Tsumeb. This magnificent Wulfenite is striking for its colour, which can be summed-up as carrot-orange. We all know Wulfenite can adopt a whole wealth of colours, but rarely is it of this rich and distinctive shade. The crystals form as thin square tabular plates, averaging about 5 mm on edge and less than 1 mm thick, and cover a around 40% of the specimen's top surface. Overgrowing many of the Wulfenite crystals are micro-botryoidal druses of similar coloured Mimetite, but a little redder and darker than the Wulfenite. The matrix is a gossany granular mix of olive green amorphous, most likely, chloritic clay minerals with pale turquoise botryoidal patches linked by small branching structures. An impressive Wulfenite with minor Mimetite from the famous Mammoth-Saint Anthony mine.
