Description
The Huayllapon mine is situated at Pasto Bueno in the Ancash Department of Peru. It has produced a very limited suit of mineral species but, my word, it is certainly a case of quality, not quantity. This large cabinet specimen is composed of a single green Fluorite crystal surrounded by several terminated, slightly milky Quartz crystals, all tending towards the gigantic! The Fluorite is a composite single octahedral crystal, approximately 11 x 10 x 9 cm, with gently rounded convex faces built from tiny polycrystalline growths across its faces. Its colour varies from light to deep bluish-minty sea green and has a glassy lustre, mottled by the myriad of micro-crystals. The latter under low magnification are seen to be octahedral with a slight modification to the cuboctahedron. The five aesthetic Quartz crystals around the Fluorite measure up to 8 cm tall and are well terminated with steep trigonal faces. A superb large display specimen of Fluorite with Quartz from the Huayllapon mine, Peru.
