A beautiful combination of three colour zoned bands of Pyromorphite crystals measuring to 7 mm, lining a 6 x 4 cm shallow vug in a characteristic Quartz matrix. It's a super example from what has been labelled Barstow's cut, although I feel the more common name is Barstow's Trench, at the head of Roughton Gill in the Caldbeck Fells of Cumbria, England. How times change; during the 1970's Richard Barstow was able to hand dig his famous trench from which he recovered so many exceedingly fine specimens. Today any form of collecting is strictly banned and enforced. The Pyromorphite crystals form as three parallel bands of differing breadth across the shallow cavity, grading from bright lemon yellow, through a vibrant deep acidic yellow to light lime green. It's a delightful large miniature which will look look even better once displayed amongst a Caldbeck Fells suite! It is accompanied by a small, handwritten card label penned in blue biro, which I'm fairly certain is ex. Bill Creighton of the former (and much loved!) Grove House Gallery in Keswick and later his private museum and shop in the market town of Cockermouth. Both Keswick and Cockermouth lie within the stunning English Lake District.
