Calcite
This remarkable Calcite from Dal'negorsk is a reminder that no matter how many specimens you have ever looked at, there is always another waiting to delight and surprise! Although not easy to describe, this colourless, quite transparent, part scalenohedral Calcite crystal forms a skewer through two broad, highly distorted flattened Calcite crystals. One of these encircles midway and the other sits on top of the scalenohedral crystal, both horizontal crystals projecting out like platforms or balconies. If only the top broad crystal were present it would be described as a Dutchman's Cap (like the famous Strontian calcites), but this has a mid-way stage! Although the two horizontal broad crystals have frosted and naturally etched terminations, their narrow prism faces are perfectly transparent, showing each crystal to be completely transparent. A wonderful and highly unusual Calcite from Dal'negorsk in Primorsky Krai, Russia.
