Fluorite with Quartz
Rotherhope Fell mine, or Rodderup Fell mine as it was also known, is located on Alston Moor on the north side of Cross Fell in Cumbria. Famed for superb purple, and colour-zoned Fluorite specimens, most of which came out during the 1930s when the mine was working and were on levels which are long since flooded. This large cabinet specimen is an absolute beauty. The Fluorite, which is a pale purple colour, is strongly activated by UV light and is therefore much more colourful in daylight than artificial light. The Fluorite forms a dome-like bed of crystals, 2.5 to 3 cm thick, and with crystals up to 3 cm on edge with prominent frosted internal inclusions. A thin layer of sugary Quartz crystals partially coats the Fluorite crystals for added effect, and the underside of the specimen is completely coated with fine quartz crystals in what is a bowl-like depression inside the 'dome'. The overall aesthetics of the specimen are great. Some of the Fluorite cubes have wear to their edges and corners, but this is consistent with age and is only apparent closeup. Large, display quality Rotherhope Fell mine specimens are rarely seen for sale and this is an exceptional example, both in terms of size (19.7 cm x 17 cm) and quality.
