This specimen of Height's mine green Fluorite is up there amongst the best because of a large, perfect gem-quality interpenetrant twinned pair of crystals which exhibit magnificent zoning. Height's mine and quarry is about midway between Stanhope and St John's Chapel in Weardale, County Durham and quarrying operations continue to this day at quite a large scale. Height's is famous for its magnificent green Fluorite, the iconic colour from this part of Northern England. A matrix of ironstone replacing limestone forms a wide exposed vug lined with sea-green Fluorite crystals and scattered corroded cuboctahedral Galena crystals to 1 cm. The single and smaller twinned Fluorite crystals range between 0.4 and 2 cm on edge and have naturally etched faces with a frosted lustre. The main twin is 2.6 cm at its longest dimension and is a beautiful emerald green with glassy lustrous faces and ice-clear transparency. This crystal is of gem-cutting quality. One crystal in particular of this pair contains concentrically nested colour zones parallel to the faces, alternating between emerald and almost colourless with a feint purple band, which extend from surface to centre. In direct daylight the colour zoning becomes alternating deep emerald and aqua-sea-green, due to its natural daylight fluorescence. Under LWUV all the Fluorite fluoresces brilliant bluish-white and in SWUV, a dull, ethereal blueish-purple. A stunning Weardale Fluorite.
