CALCITE with NATIVE COPPER Inclusions
Native Copper included within Calcite is one of the most sought after mineral combinations from the copper mining area of Houghton County, Michigan, USA; also referred to as the Upper Peninsula, or U.P . This specimen is from the Franklin mine which originally closed in 1880, but then was later absorbed into the Quincy Mining Company. A translucent to gemmy terminated, multi-faced Calcite crystal stands upright measuring to 4.2 cm tall. It is heavily included by sheets of copper-red Native Copper, giving the Calcite a pinkish hue. The matrix is a reddish volcanic rock overgrown by colourless-white Quartz and Calcite with inclusions and free grown Native Copper. It is also included by green Pumpellyite and rare yellow micro-crystals of Epidote. A classic Upper Michigan copper mining area specimen and comes with its own purpose made base.
