Malachite
Malachite was a ubiquitous mineral throughout the Tsumeb orebody and crystallised in so many different ways, quite commonly as pseudomorphs. However, this lovely small cabinet specimen is that less frequent acicular habit forming silky, deep forest to emerald green hemispheres over a continuous layer of micro-crystals of creamy white Dolomite. Beautiful tufts and small sprays of acicular Malachite are scattered all over the surface, but the specimen is dominated by three magnificent, undamaged Malachite hemispheres, each to about 1.5 cm diameter. Due to the acicular (needle-like) habit of the radiating crystals, from any direction, the body of each hemisphere appears dark green while the peripheral terminations catch the light forming a light green halo. The underlying matrix is of fine granular, cream to pale pink dolomite, characteristic of Tsumeb’s karstic metasedimentary country rocks.\n
