Of all the places in the world where Celestine (formerly Celestite) occurs, there is no doubt Madagascar has produced the very best; to the point where Celestine is almost synonymous with Madagascar. This spectacular large cabinet specimen displays several large inky sky blue crystals with sharp chisel tip terminations. These are enhanced even more by their aesthetic contrast against much smaller Celestine crystals of delicate pale blue to almost colourless. This specimen is from Sakoany, close to the Katsepy Commune in Mitsinjo, Mahajanga, Madagascar. For those of you unfamiliar with Madagascan geography (myself included), this locality is close to the coast on the north west shoreline of the island and adjacent to the banks of the Betsiboka River. Celestine was first discovered here in 1967 and those of us of a certain age will vividly recall when this material first came onto the market and how stunned we were by its magnificence. Celestine is still mined but production is limited on an annual basis. The average depth from where it is excavated is only about 15 m , found in a layer between a crinoidal limestones and a sandy greywacke. This is a world class specimen in terms of size, colour and crystal development.
