Excellent well-crystallized, raspberry-red to blood-red Cinnabar crystals measuring to around 8 mm are attractively scattered and clustered in a geode of crystalline creamy-white Dolomite, with some colourless crystals of Quartz. Cinnabar, mercury sulphide, is one of the oldest known minerals and was a cornerstone of medieval alchemy. According to the ancient records of Chinese scholar Qian, the main burial chamber of Qin Shi Huangdi, at the site of the Terracotta Army dating back to 3rd century BCE, contains vast pools of liquid mercury modelling China's hundred rivers, the Yellow river and the Yangtze river around the tomb. This chamber, the size of a football field, remains sealed. This is a most pleasing and rather delightful geode of Dolomite from the Yunchangping mine in Tongren County, Guizhou Province, China within which some rather stunningly well-formed Cinnabar crystals are protected.
