Chalcocite
We sometimes talk of museum quality specimens and the attributes which make a specimen qualify for this impressive title. One quick look at this Chalcocite, coating a 13 x 8 cm display surface ,requires no further consideration as you could well be looking at a fine specimen in the Philip Rashleigh Gallery in the Royal Cornwall Museum! It's one of those specimen which you pour over in a museum display wishing if only we find specimens like that now! Not only are the Chalcocite crystals large, superb and spectacular, but the specimen is from that most famous of Cornish mines, Dolcoath, known as the Queen of Cornish mines! Dolcoath lay just to the east of Camborne and today much of its old working lie deep beneath the outskirts of Camborne and Roskear. Dolcoath has produced a wonderful suite of mineral specimens amongst which is the copper sulphide, Chalcocite. The Chalcocite crystals cover a matrix of mixed Quartz, massive disseminated Chalcocite and light pinkish brick red Feldspar. Some of the massive Chalcocite has a iridescent patina. the number 1348 is glued beneath the specimen. The Chalcocite forms a thick, flattened hexagonal prisms of between 0.5 and 1.5 cm across flats and occasionally near to 2 cm! On average, the crystals are nearer the larger end of this range. They are a near-uniform bluish steel grey with a subdued metallic lustre and are completely undamaged; quite remarkable, given the number and size of the crystals. They form quite perfect hexagons although there is no alignment of crystals in any way whatsoever, as they are all set at widely varying angles. It is a sensational hand sized specimen of wonderfully crystallised Chalcocite from Dolcoath mine, Camborne, Cornwall.
