Sphalerite on Fluorite with Pyrite inclusions
This fine large cabinet specimen of Sphalerite on Fluorite is simply noted as from Derbyshire but there are probably a number of candidate mines in that area. The Fluorite is typical Derbyshire Orefield with colourless to grey intergrown cubic crystals filled with golden inclusions of Chalcopyrite. The large Sphalerite crystal aggregate (4.8 cm across) sat on the Fluorite has a natural etched appearance also very typical of Derbyshire, with a partial coating of Calcite on preferential faces. On the base a few small golden scalenohedral Calcite crystals further reinforce the Derbyshire connection. The Fluorite crystals are quite large, at up to 3 cm on edge, and despite some minor wear to a few of the corners this is a sizable and significant display specimen for Derbyshire. A small old (probably 19th century) handwritten label accompanies the specimen.
