Malachite

We tend to encounter Malachite at Tsumeb in the form of pseudomorphs after Azurite or derived from other secondary paragenetic processes. This is a superb example of what is sometimes called primary Malachite, meaning it is crystallised as Malachite crystals and not as a chemical alteration product. Tsumeb mine needs little introduction, having been worked from almost the beginning to end of the twentieth century and situated in northern Namibia in the Oshikoto Region. The Malachite forms dark chrome to emerald green, blocky crystal clusters typically of about 5 x 5 x 10 mm, grading from outer translucent shells into opaque centres, all with an eye-catching bright, glassy lustre. The terminations of these blocks feather into fine micro-acicular needle-like crystals. This fine cabinet specimen has a solid underlying matrix of mixed dark grey sulphides, dominated by massive Chalcocite, with an earthy, brick red matt surface coating. A lovey Tsumeb Malachite.\n
