Description
Gem minerals from the large pegmatite bodies at Volodarsk-Volynskii in the Ukraine are highly coveted by collectors and this impressive Topaz crystal is a splendid example from these famous mines. I should perhaps also point out this locality name has now changed to Khoroshiv Raion, but collectors, and labelled specimens, still largely adopt the traditional name of Volodarsk-Volynskii or just Volodarsk. This ex-matrix crystal measures 10.3 cm tall and is 5.2 x 4.1 cm in cross-section with a cleaved base and complex, multi-bevelled termination. Two adjacent faces of the termination are slightly bruised yet have little impact on the overall look when these face backward. The surface of the crystal is frosted, resulting in a matt to sub-glassy lustre. Held up against daylight, the entire crystal is a translucent pale greyish-champaign along its a and b axes (sideways-on) but down the c axis (longways) is a much deeper peachy-champaign. Placed on my desk against a neutral background, the whole prism is deep translucent apricot grading to a light apricot termination. An excellent Topaz from the Chamber Pegmatites of the Volodarsk-Volynskii igneous complex.
