Baryte Sawn Cross-Section$1,500.00

Wire transfers available, to set up
A superb cut cross-section taken from a Baryte stalactite at the Hollandtwine mine section of Dirtlow Rake, south-west of Castleton in Derbyshire, England. The central 7 cm diameter core is composed of outwardly radiating crystals of pale, greyish blue Baryte and this is surrounded by circular banded orange tan and cream Baryte. The overall diameter is 9.9 cm. One face is cut and varnished and the opposite side is a broken/cleaved plane crossing the stalactite which has been left in its natural state (that is, unvarnished). A 'rake' is a local mining term for a mineralised vein and the Dirtlow Rake system extended for a few kilometres from just south of the village of Castleton, out to the south-west. This historic mining site is now entirely closed to collectors and the majority of the open workings are now backfilled and landscaped. This is a great example of this form of Baryte from the Hollandtwine mine area of Dirtlow Rake, collected in December 1989 and accompanied with several previous labels.
