Baryte
Two individually mounted large thumbnail specimens of ice-clear terminated Baryte crystals from Dalmellington mine, just south of Frizington in west Cumbria, England. The overall measurements of each specimen are 2.8 x 1.5 x 0.5 cm and 2.8 x 1.2 x 0.8 cm although the actual thickness of each Baryte blade is close to 2 mm. Both crystals are totally colourless and transparent to the point of being gemmy and have perfect bevelled and flat terminations. The smaller specimen is attached to a small cluster of dark brown Dolomite crystals and what appears to be Galena, albite this very being minor. This specimen is far from typical of that normally associated with Dalmellington mine but is still thought to be from here. Similar but less gemmy crystals with Dolomite are known and it is possible at least one specimen in the NHM (London) contains minor Galena. Each specimen is mounted vertically on bevelled, square acrylic bases.
