The Pallaflat mine, SW of the village of Bigrigg and NW of the town of Egremont in West Cumbria, is renowned for its characteristic tight clusters of small and perfect gemmy Calcites. This excellent small cabinet specimen exudes 'Pallaflat' and is composed of colourless and gemmy transparent equant Calcite crystals of typically 1 cm, all with a magnificent bright glassy lustre. These cover a hollow dome of earthy Limonite, probably intermixed with Hematite and whose structure may have originated from a former fossil prior to metasomatic replacement. Fossil solitary and colonial corrals are sometime seen in specimens having been replaced by Hematite. This superb specimen is accompanied with an old handwritten label with its number, 384, also glued on the specimen. This label has traits of the famous Cumbrian mineral dealer John Graves, but is more likely to be the hand writing of a German collector, whose label is shown on page 121 of the Mineralogical Record's special supplement 'Classic Minerals of Northern England', Vol. 41, No. 1, Jan-Feb 2010.
