Acanthite
This thumbnail specimen of the silver sulphide Acanthite is from the Port Radium District, adjacent to the Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Just one glance at the map makes you shiver, with an annual average temperature of -7 C and a winter average of around -25 C. The Acanthite forms mainly equant lead grey crystals of cubic appearance with complex surface growth patterns and a metallic, steely-blue patina. Individual crystals attain up to 9 mm on edge and form a tight cluster. The actual locality for this Acanthite is Echo Bay mine, a mine known for its Five-Element Type ore deposit. The specimen is mounted on a small square colourless acrylic base and is accompanied by a "Museum of Natural Sciences, National Museums of Canada" label.
