The wonderful specimen producing mines of Broken Hill in Australia are famous for many mineral species, Smithsonite being right up there with the best! This wonderful example from the MMM mine is richly covered with 2 to 3 mm diameter globular clusters of translucent pale grey Smithsonite, often tending towards the wheatsheaf habit and all set against a vuggy, matt, mid-grey Coronadite matrix. The Coronadite, a lead-manganese oxide, forms a convoluted ropy structure, with the appearance of lava or slag. Please note: due to a fracture across part of the back face, this has been stabilized along its length with silicone sealant. This is totally hidden when displayed.
