This large cabinet specimen from Kelly mine in New Mexico is of top museum quality and is a stunning example of Smithsonite from this world famous locality. Kelly mine in Socorro County, New Mexico, is without doubt one of the USA’s most iconic mineral localities, particularly famous for its world-class Smithsonite. The mine produced zinc, lead, copper, silver and gold from the Kelly Limestone. This large cabinet specimen displays a magnificent 11.3 x 8.4 cm face of gently undulating, botryoidal aquamarine green Smithsonite with a stippled, micro-crystallised surface and resultant, mildly satin lustre. The colour, due to the presence of copper, is remarkable and quite difficult to describe. Although it is an aquamarine green, this does not quite do it justice, because this complex colour has accents of nickel green and verdigris. The specimen now comes a clear acrylic base which, although I have not seen it, I believe has a milled contoured profile of the specimen’s lower edge to hold the Smithsonite upright.
