For all its mineral wealth and remarkable number of well crystallised species, wonderfully crystallised Quartz from the Cavnic mine in Romania is one of its iconic species and this gorgeous specimen, tinged pink around its base with crystalline Rhodochrosite is a great and showy example. The Quartz crystals range from about 1.5 to 5 cm tall and have developed with barrel-shaped prisms, bowing out slightly around their mid-point. All crystals are translucent white and grade to colourless, partly transparent tips. The terminations are squat, forming acute-pyramidal slopes. Although minor, the bubble gum to coral-pink Rhodochrosite forms curved and nested saddle-shaped rosettes around and between the Quartz crystals. A fabulous Quartz from Cavnic.
