This magnificent and genuinely show-stopping gemmy Topaz is from Dassu in the Braldu Valley of Gilgit, Northern Areas, Pakistan. Not that I have visited this locality, but from all available photographs its appears the most spectacular location imaginable, precariously situated mid-way on towering cliff faces rising from the valley floor far below! Dassu produces incredible specimens of Topaz. This large miniature/small cabinet specimen forms almost a pure cube and is a stunning example for its size, clarity and well-defined crystal habit. Measuring an impressive 4.5 x 5.0 x 4.7 cm, the crystal has a perfectly cleaved base from which six totally asymmetric prism faces rise to a completely flat frosted pinacoid. One of the six faces is also similarly frosted while the remaining five are totally transparent and entirely gemmy. Although completely colourless when viewed in daylight, the Topaz adopts a feint pinkish champaign in artificial light. A section of the prism is missing from where two faces intersect, this area displaying glassy conchoidal surfaces. The prism is also bevelled between the faces and pinacoid, with each bevel differing markedly in its geometry. A remarkable gem quality Topaz from Dassu in Pakistan.
