Description
A rib of Quartz matrix is completely covered on opposite faces with excellent Quartz crystals and occasional Pyrite. This specimen from the Huancavelica Department in Peru. The mine itself is not recorded, but this is a common practice to protect sources and miners. The base of the specimen has crystals developed to a maximum of 1 cm, but the display surface is a splendid intergrown array of colourless to slightly milky Quartz crystals, of tapered acicular habit, growing to 2.8 cm. The highlight is a perfect example of Japan Law contact twinning, as two flattened Quartz crystals measuring 1. 9 and 2.5 cm respectively. The re-entrant angle at the contact is a little over 84 degrees, but always appears, and is usually thought to be 90 degrees. Between the Quartz crystals, three separate clusters of golden-white cubic Pyrite crystals to 4 mm on edge nestle. An excellent example of a Japan Law Quartz twin.
