Quartz (Japan Law twin) with Pyrite
A rib of Quartz matrix is completely covered on opposite faces with excellent colourless transparent Quartz crystals (the variety Rock Crystal) and occasional Pyrite. This specimen from the Huancavelica Department in Peru, an area in the high Andean mountains. The mine itself is not recorded, but this is a common practice to protect sources and miners and due to the often remote situation of the mines. The base of the specimen has crystals developed to a maximum of 1 cm in length, but the display surface is a splendid intergrown array of colourless to slightly milky Quartz crystals, of tapered acicular habit, growing to 2.8 cm in length. The highlight is a perfect example of Japan Law contact twinning, as two flattened Quartz crystals measuring 1.9 and 2.5 cm respectively. The re-entrant angle at the contact is a little over 84 degrees, but always appears, and is usually thought to be 90 degrees. Between the Quartz crystals, three separate clusters of golden-white cubic Pyrite crystals to 4 mm on edge nestle. An excellent example of a Japan Law Quartz twin from South America.
