This large cabinet specimen (16.5 x 11.5 cm) from the Roughton Gill area of the Caldbeck Fells in Cumbria has certainly been on its travels in historic collections and dealerships. Cerussite crystals richly cover the display face, displaying an inter grown prismatic straw-like habit. The Cerussite varies from milky-white to creamy and is formed on, and in, a Quartz/Goethite and rock matrix. The history of the specimen is well documented with many labels, probably starting with Bryce M. Wright (Senior) circa 1860. The specimen then passed in to the William W. Jeffries' (1820-1906) collection in 1864, and was acquired from him in 1905 by the Carnegie Museum. This is an excellent, fascinating and historic Cerussite specimen from the Caldbeck Fells. Please note that the Bryce M. Wright label is a photocopy of the original, which appears to have been faded and probably water damaged. By marked contrast, the W.W.J label is original and superb (No. 4088). Other labels include the Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia; David & Elizabeth Hacker and an old Crystal Classics label from 'The Old Linhay' days.
