A superb specimen of beautifully crystallised Kermesite from Pezinok, in the Bratislava Region of Slovakia. Several mines worked this rich deposit for antimony, gold and iron, with an impressive list of 105 different mineral species now recorded. Of all of these, the mines are particularly noted for their excellent specimens of Kermesite, an antimony oxysulphide. On this small cabinet specimen the Kermesite forms characteristic dark maroon, iridescent fan-like arrays of acicular crystals, measuring to 3 cm, associated with silvery metallic grey Stibnite on a light grey matrix of country-rock. It’s a rich and showy Kermesite and a delightful example from this area in far western Slovakia, only about 30 km from the Austrian border.
