TOPAZ on Smoky QUARTZ
A very different looking small cabinet specimen of largely colourless Topaz with rich deep smoky to golden Quartz crystals from the Adun-Cholon Range in Eastern-Siberia, Russia. Terminated Quartz crystals, up to 1.5 cm long, of dark smoky chocolate brown commonly grade towards either colourless or intense golden yellow. Amongst these are several Topaz crystals, the finest measuring about 4.5 x 3.0 x 1.5 cm, colourless yet with a yellow to greenish tinge. Its outstanding feature is the remarkable growth patterns covering the highly lustrous surface, which I can best liken to a detailed illustration of thermal convection cells. You really need to see it! A totally fascinating Topaz originally from the Frank A. Lewis Collection and ex. U.S. National Museum (Division of Mineralogy) with label.
