Cuprian Smithsonite

Cuprian, or copper-rich Smithsonite, is one of the rarer forms of Smithsonite at Tsumeb mine and rarely forms discrete crystals. Instead, it usually occurs as stalactitic and botryoidal aggregates like seen in this colourful large miniature specimen. The colour, between sea-green and turquoise, is accentuated by the wonderful greasy to wet lustre. The central 'tube' at the core of the stalactite is just about visible in the video, revealing an insight into how it formed. The small black dots and rings on the surface are probably undifferentiated manganese oxides, rather than eyes, but at certain angles it does look like this specimen is looking at you. A really nice example of the copper-rich variety of Smithsonite from Tsumeb.
