Dioptase on Calcite
There are several mineral associations with the copper silicate Dioptase at Tsumeb, but this of snowy white Calcite covering a pinkish fine granular Dolomite (rock) matrix is the most classic. Such specimens were discovered on 32 Level in Zero Stope and have perhaps become the most iconic mineral associated with this most famous of mines. Tsumeb operated for almost 100 years, finally closing in 1996. This delightful large miniature is 7 cm long (just within miniature limits!) and is almost entirely encrusted with fine, deep emerald green Dioptase crystals of up to 1.2 cm long, all of a highly reflective glassy lustre. Although little of the snow white Calcite can be seen, there is sufficient to lend a superb contrast to the Dioptase, making the crystals stand out. If you are searching for an excellent miniature Dioptase (or small cabinet specimen), this will surely fit the bill!
