Baryte on Dolomite
This nicely crystallised blade of red-tinged Baryte is from a mine in the Frizington district of West Cumbria, England. Frizington is a small town which lay adjacent to iron mines both north and south, the latter extending to the north east of another famous mining town, Cleator Moor. The pale smoky blue Baryte crystal measures 4.5 x 2.5 x 1.0 cm and nestles in a matrix of Hematite-stained creamy Dolomite crystals. These form curved, saddle-shaped crystals with a bright pearly lustre. Such Dolomite was referred to by miners as 'Pearl Spar'. Adding to the Baryte's aesthetic, microscopically fine Hematite inclusions impart a brick red band through one side.
