This wonderful specimen is yet again another amazing habit of Calcite; one of the most common minerals on Earth, yet that with the most diverse range of habits. From the renowned Baia Mare mining district in Maramureș County, Romania, this was a rich lead-zinc deposit that had many mines operating up until 1989. Spherical balls of Calcite are a famous feature of this mining district and this spectacular specimen is a terrific example, especially if you have been on the look-out for one. It is so perfect and of such delicious colour, it would not look out of place sat in an ice cream cone! Measuring 5.4 cm in diameter, the micro-crystalline Calcite crystals form a near-perfect hemisphere of a glassy, slightly creamy-white which sometimes adopts a delicate phantom-pink. Projecting from the base is a small finger-like rib of pale buff-cream Calcite. Amazing and very showy! This specimen comes with a custom-made display base in clear acrylic, contour-milled to engage with the specimen's base profile.
