Galena
A seldom seen specimen of crystallised Galena primary ore from the North Mine, Broken Hill, Australia. This large miniature is composed of intergrown cubic Galena crystals measuring to 2.8 cm with corners modified to octahedral faces and is a most attractive example. The Galena is a typical silver-grey with a dull metallic lustre. As its name would suggest, this is the most northerly mine on the line of lode, the open pit (No.1 Open Cut) being that immediately to the south of Argent Street. This was among the largest of Broken Hill's silver-lead-zinc mines and was named for the end of the orebody. It was first claimed in 1883 with operations ending in 1993.
