Chalcocite
Well-formed pseudo-hexagonal Chalcocite crystals are densely packed over two areas of a mid to dark grey Killas matrix. Two old labels, both in Italian, accompany this specimen and the only locality information recorded on them is Cornwall (in Italian, Cornovaglia). If attempting to be more specific, we suggest it is probably from the Carn Brea area, but suggesting a specific mine is impossible and should not be attempted due to high uncertainty. The Chalcocite crystals are typically 2 to 4 mm broad with some developed up to 5 mm. The complex prisms are black with a sooty patina, resulting in a matt overall lustre. Killas is an old mining term for a metamorphosed rock of sedimentary origin.
