Pyromorphite
A tremendous cabinet specimen of lustrous Pyromorphite in distinctive lime green crystals measuring to 4 mm. These richly cover and line cavities on a light brown Pyromorphite matrix. This fine example is from the MMM mine at Broken Hill in New south Wales, Australia. Now usually referred to as the MMM mine, this was formerly called the British mine or Broken Hill South Mine. The British Mine was formed in 1887 to control Blocks 15 and 16 and operations extended both sides of the Menindee Road. The operations on the southern side of Menindee Road were bought by North mine which was subsequently bought by the MMM mine. The range of colour in Pyromorphite through the Broken Hill mines is wide and varied, often in shades of pinkish tan or chocolate brown. We become so used to seeing such examples from the Broken Hill mines that a more traditional green specimen is almost a novelty!
