Smoky Quartz
A magnificent, very delicate Smoky Quartz crystal from the Grimsel Area of the Hasli Valley, close to Bern in Switzerland. Emerging from a cleaved base of milky Quartz, a 12 cm high, perfectly terminated ice-clear, delicate pale champaign Quartz crystal rises to form an impressive showy specimen of museum quality. The lower half of the crystal is optically clear, although perfect transparency is interrupted by internal flaws in the crystal lattice, causing planar reflections and silk-like sheens criss-crossing the prism body. These gradually give way to ever increasingly optically clear Quartz, leaving the top half perfectly gemmy. The prism faces exhibit subtle and delicate horizontal growth patterns while the terminated faces are mirror smooth. All faces have a beautiful and brilliant glassy lustre. The crystal steps-in as the termination is approached, forming a two-tier termination, a form of split growth pattern. It is only fair to point out that about 3 mm below the apex of the crystal, a tiny 1 mm chip exists on one face edge. This is extremely minor and is not visible when viewed yet must be pointed out. To one side a 6 cm long translucent Quartz crystal intersects the main prism close to its base. A spectacular Alpine pale Smoky Quartz crystal from the Grimsel Area of Switzerland.
