Goethite
An intriguing small cabinet specimen of Goethite from Schönbrunn in Saxony, Germany, having a compact columnar habit with both ends displaying fine radial patterns at the column ends. This specimen is something really quite different and is yet another superb example of a quite different crystallisation habit of this iron(III) oxide-hydroxide. The columns are typically 1.5 cm wide and pack together in a pattern similar to basalt columns, adopting both pentagonal and hexagonal cross-sections and concave, radially crystallised ends. This specimen is accompanied with what is clearly an old, handwritten label together with an antique label glued to the specimen numbered ‘169’. In my opinion this is a highly attractive and fascinating specimen.\n
