Wulfenite
This fabulous small cabinet specimen of apricot orange Wulfenite is from Stefanie mine close to Bad Bleiberg in the Carinthia state of Austria. This mine is in the very southern region of Austria and less than 10 km from the boarders with both Italy and Slovenia. The mine closed in the late 1980s but during its years of operation produced lead and zinc and a range of mineral species of which Wulfenite was one of its most spectacular. This is a superb specimen entirely built from tabular blades, often with bevelled corners and averaging 1 to 1.5 cm across. The Wulfenite has a preferential coating from one direction of matt powder-like Wulfenite which produces a matt apricot texture and lustre. The opposite uncoated side has mirror-like intense peachy-apricot orange faces with a bright glassy lustre. A delightful specimen.
